Install Rainguard™ in minutes without any tools!
Simple illustrated instructions (in English and Spanish) are shipped with your order. Rainguard™ fits all standard downspout sizes and shapes-up to 14-inch circumference!
To install Rainguard™
1. Peel the white paper away from the back of the adhesive foam gasket strip. Press the sticky side of the foam gasket strip around the bottom of your downspout. Use the whole strip, overlapping if necessary. Caution! Bottom edge of downspout may have sharp edges, so position gasket strip slightly higher, as shown.
2. Hold the open end of the Rainguard™ tube around the foam gasket strip. The spool should be resting on the ground, facing the direction you want it to unroll.
The top of Rainguard™ should be no more than 16 inches above ground level, and should extend ½ inch above the top of the foam gasket strip.
3. Position the releasable attachment tie (shipped in the axel of the spool) over Rainguard™ and around the center of the foam gasket strip. Tighten the attachment tie to create a secure seal. Wait for the rain, so you can watch it work!
To loosen or remove Rainguard™
Press the release tab (in the head of the attachment tie) with a screwdriver to loosen or remove.
How does Rainguard™ work?
Rainwater from the roof creates pressure in the downspout, causing Rainguard™ to roll out. Water sprinkles from holes along the length of the unit (see below). During heavier rains, water is also expelled from a large flush hole near the spool. When pressure from rainwater lessens, Rainguard™ rolls up automatically-usually within 30-60 minutes!
Length Adjustment
Rainguard™ can be shortened. Removal of the unit is not required. Simply roll out Rainguard™ and place a heavy object at the end to prevent re-rolling. Determine where you would like the unit to stop, and cut a new oval flush-hole (3" x 4") with a sharp knife or scissors in the outer top surface of the tube.
Sprinkler Holes
Rainguard™ Automatic Downspout Extensions have two small (3/32") sprinkler holes located 24 inches from the downspout, and two more holes every 7 inches along the remaining length of the unit. The sprinklers distribute water on your lawn, and also help the unit rewind by ensuring that water drains from the unit after the rain stops.
Sprinkler distribution can be changed by punching more small holes in the outer top surface of the tube. If rainwater volume exceeds the sprinkler capacity, Rainguard™ will unroll past the sprinkler holes to discharge water through the large flush-hole.
Our 25' Gutter Extension Tubing is designed for distance drainage, and does NOT have sprinkler holes.
Self-Cleaning Design
Rainguard™ is designed to self-clean during heavy rains, when water pressure expels dirt, debris and leaves from the flush hole near the spool. If you install a new roof, heavy gravel particles may accumulate and prevent Rainguard™ from retracting automatically. Simply remove the unit to wash this material out. The attachment tie can be released and reused-just press the small tab on the head of the tie.
Winter Use
Removal is optional, and is easily performed with the releasable attachment tie. Rainguard™ components are not adversely affected by cold, but do not attempt to move the unit if it is frozen to the ground.
Where is Rainguard™ manufactured?
All Rainguard™ components are manufactured in North America. Our rewinding spool is made in South Carolina, the releasable attachment ties are from Wisconsin, and the foam sealing gasket is from Pennsylvania. Other parts are manufactured in Canada, where final assembly and packaging prepare the finished product for distribution from Niagara Falls, New York.
